WAYS & MEANS COMMITTEE
CO-CHAIRS
Darlene Cleven (BPW Canada Vice President, Chair of Publicity & PR)
Margaret Good (Co-ordinator of Club Projects from BPW Brampton)
|
The role of
the Ways and Means Committee is to identify and promote fundraising ideas to
support clubs as well as BPW Canada initiatives. Despite rising costs, BPW
Canada fees have not increased in over a decade. Funds are needed to continue
working on our priority issues such as Child Care, Income Security and Women in
Politics. We post some ideas here and continue to look for interesting ways to
raise money for our activities. Please contact us if you have any further ideas
for funding.

Progressive Choices Magazine

BPW Canada and Progressive
Choices Magazine have signed an agreement for a joint fund-raising
initiative. BPW members are receiving a complimentary copy of Progressive
Choices, a national magazine whose mandate is "to raise the profile of
women working in many industry sectors as well as to educate, inform, inspire
and to provide direction." For every BPW Canada member who buys a two-year
subscription (nine issues over two years) at a cost of $27.95 total (including
shipping and taxes), Nancy Thompson, owner of the magazine, has agreed to remit
one-third of that ($9.32) directly to BPW Canada.
This is a great opportunity for BPW Canada
to raise money. As well, the magazine promotes women in business, and there may
be promotional and advertising opportunities for our business-owning members.
The most recent edition of Progressive Choices featured a profile on BPW Canada!
This offer also applies to secondary sales so convince your friends,
relatives and colleagues to buy a subscription, using the order form that is
enclosed in the package. (Convince them to join BPW as well!) If you haven’t
yet received your free copy but wish to subscribe, go directly to the
Progressive Choices site
(www.progressivechoices.ca/) .
Please indicate that you are a BPW member.

War and Peace in the Workplace - Diversity, Conflict,
Understanding, Reconciliation
Ever wonder why we can't just get
along? Why we react to each other the way we do? Most conflict in the
workplace comes from our differences - both our diversity in the bid 'D' issues
such as race, gender, or ability but also diversity in the small 'd'
issues such as values, marital and family
status, generations or thought processes. Diversity can be problematic and it
can be wonderful. As individuals and
organizations, we can benefit from the many perspectives that create the
synergy to move an organization forward by leaps and bounds. On the other hand, differences can trigger
conflict, toxic work groups, low morale, harassment, misunderstandings and
employee turnover. Many organizations
adopt respectful workplace or harassment policies. But this isn’t enough to realize the benefits of a diverse
workforce or to minimize diversity based conflict. We need to shift how we perceive and work with others.
Jeanne's book illustrates how we have the
choice of allowing conflict to spiral down into dysfunction or of taking
charge, becoming aware and developing understanding.

"WOMEN OF THE WORLD"
by Jeanette Arsenault
Singer/songwriter Jeanette Arsenault chose BPW Canada's Convention in
Toronto as the venue to launch her new CD, Women of the World, a
collection of songs by and for women. In support of BPW's aims and
efforts, Jeanette will donate to BPWC a portion of the revenue on
sales made to BPW members and through our website.
"Women of the World" is a call to action, a celebration, a tribute and
an affirmation of the power of women's voices in the world. It is all
about empowering women.
The beautiful CDs, with cover art by BPW Trenton member Barb Neri,
will make great Christmas presents, raffle prizes, and gifts for
speakers at your club.
This is the first national fund-raising project for this biennium. At
no cost or risk to BPW Canada, we can support a generous and talented
performer, celebrate the achievements of women and earn some
much-needed revenue. I would expect every club to order several copies.
- Fran Donaldson, BPWC President
"Women of the World":
In support of our work, Jeanette will make a donation to BPW Canada from all sales through this website.

The Velvet Hammer
Book by Elaine Allison
Elaine
was our keynote speaker on leadership at the opening ceremonies of BPW Canada
Convention 2006. This book, based
on her experience as a prison guard in Canada’s correctional system, presents
an analysis of how women deal with conflict, leadership and power, and offers
some concrete suggestions for ways of reacting that may be more productive.
The book has received excellent reviews.
Table of Contents:
- How and why women lead differently than men?
- How to manage friends and handle the early transitions of leadership with ease?
- How to deal with the mean girl syndrome, conflict and team conflict with grace?
- How to handle even the most dominant alpha-male with tact and diplomacy?
- How to tell someone to knock it off - nicely.
This book is
for you. Some 98% of leadership books have been written by men, and often the
tactics suggested don't work for a woman. Discover a myriad of Velvet Hammer
techniques in this amazing "how to" book where you will find skills,
ideas and tips to help you handle your leadership role eloquently and
gracefully, while getting things done on your terms.
Elaine has offered to allow BPW Canada to sell her book, with a portion of sales going
to our organization. To order Elaine’s book go

The COFFEE BREAK Challenge

|
Past President Gertrude Demecha challenged members at the convention to donate the cost of a coffee break. Then she set
the pace by donating the price of a dinner - $25.
|
|
|
Selkirk President, Norma Boulé accepts Gertrude’s challenge $25 & challenges all Presidents to match it.
|
Memorial Gifts – A Fitting Tribute

|
|
Past President Doris Guyatt suggested that a
donation to BPW would be a lovely memorial to honour deceased club members
or friends. Doris made the first donation in memory of Janet
Follett and Joan Lowery of the Toronto Club.
|
The names of those honoured by a memorial donation will be posted on the BPW Canada website
(Memorials).
The money will be allocated to two activities - the Memorial Ceremony at future
conventions (flowers, video/photos, candles) and the recognition of service to
BPW (certificates, hangers, flowers for members with 20 years or more).

Margaret Good’s Suggestion

Maybe every club could have one special fund-raising event – card game, golf tournament,
garage or yard sale, book fair, high tea, fashion show, bake sale – and split the
proceeds, 50% for the club and 50% to National.
