BPW Canada WEPs Initiative

The BPW Canada WEPs initiative begins with promoting awareness with our governmental representatives, business and civil society leaders. Members of Parliament who recognize that Canada's economic outlook is closely tied to how effectively we leverage all of our national talent can play an important role in bringing about an “Equality Means Business” mindset. Supporting BPW Canada WEPs efforts begins with becoming an informed Signatory to the WEPs Statement of Support. To further promote the WEPs 7 principles in the Canadian workplace and in our executive boardrooms you may consider conducting consultations with your constituents and encourage CEOs in your respective communities to become signatories.

The following information package and resources have been approved by BPW International to promote the BPW Canada WEPs initiative and to obtain Signatories to the Statement of Support.

Kiva Report for the BPW-Saskatoon - submitted by Gerlinde Sarkar, July 2010

Equal Voice

Common Objectives - "BPW" and "Equal Voice"

At the BPW-Canada AGM in Ottawa, on July 22, 2011 a resolution was passed to

THEREFORE IT BE RESOLVED THAT BPW Canada urge the Government of Canada to enact legislation requiring political parties to ensure that women occupy at least 50% of each party's candidate list and that women be in at least 40% of the electable positions.

Equal Voice is a group of women and men who are deeply concerned about Canadian politics and have formed a multi-partisan, non-profit organization. The mission of "Equal Voice" is to promote the election of more women to all levels of Government and ultimately, change the face of Canadian politics. Chapters exist in most provinces.

BPW-Canada support's the good work of Equal Voice and will explore and promote collaboraion with this organization and ecourage partnerships across each province.

Collaboration may involve the following:

  • become and sustain a membership ($50) at the National level
  • encourage the provincial organization to become members
  • encourage the local BPW clubs to invite representatives of Equal Voice to one of the meetings to speak about the services offered by Equal Voice and how they can collaborate at the local level.
  • give some financial support to this organization, or be a sponsor to special events (up to $500) so that our name and logos are linked with this organization

(Equal Voice is planning to provide opportunities for discussions about the issues, and also provide training on the steps involved in getting nominated and then run for office. The individual chapters are at varying stages in each province.)

Project Five-O sponsors

In 1980, five of the world’s largest and most influential women’s organizations came together with a mission to provide vocational training for poor women in developing countries. The group, including BPW International, the International Federation of University Women, the International Council of Women, Soroptimist International and Zonta International, launched Project Five-O at the second World Conference for Women in Copenhagen. Its purpose was and still is to use the skills and expertise of the members of the participating organizations to provide training courses in income-generating skills, accompanied by training in health, nutrition, hygiene, child care and literacy. Visit www.project-five-o.org for more information. Unfortunately, Soroptimist, Zonta and University Women have withdrawn from this project, leaving only BPW International and International Council of Women. BPWI President Liz Benham is looking for new partners.
